Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
