The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
